SEMANA SANTA 4

Saturday was more of the same. I was overwhelmed with the sheer scope of the celebration going on around me, though I must admit it was a bit wearying. Especially after not getting much sleep. The church bell chimed in the morning signaling the commencement of Mass, and the church I kept going back to, La Merced, had a good flow of people coming through, whether Mass was going on or not. One of the most colorful streets in Antigua where I kept going back for photographs, turned out to have some semi-disguised little hotels and restaurants on it. I had thought they were just private residences. Here I found the Bavarian Jardin, a place run by a German named Klaus and that had one of the nicest bars I've found in Guatemala. I met a whole slew of folks staying there from the US Peace Corps, including Kisten and Amanda, who when they get back to the States better go check out Burning Man.

Domingo de Resurrecion (Easter Sunday) was actually much, much quieter than the previous days. Many of the people who had come for the weekend left. There were no more alfombres, and the procession was much, much smaller. But the band was playing Happy Music! It was such a relief to hear happy music, you just don't know! Firecrackers were going off with much more frequency as well. And it was sunny and warm… and we feasted on wine and cheese.
